Phil Foden has committed his future to Manchester City by signing a new contract, extending a stay that would have expired next summer. The 26-year-old has pledged his loyalty to the club under new head coach Enzo Maresca, having spent his entire senior career under former manager Pep Guardiola.
Foden made his first-team debut as a 17-year-old under Guardiola and has gone on to make 369 appearances for City, winning six Premier League titles, one Champions League and two FA Cups — making him one of the club’s most decorated players alongside John Stones and Bernardo Silva. His peak came in the season following City’s Treble, when he registered a career-high 27 goals and 12 assists, though the two seasons since have been less productive.
Last season, Foden scored seven goals and assisted five times across 33 Premier League games, with his role in the side shifting as Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo operated out wide and Rayan Cherki was often preferred in an attacking midfield position. That left Foden operating deeper on occasions, limiting his scoring and creative output. The previous campaign he managed seven goals and two assists in 28 top-flight matches.
The winger was left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad in May following an inconsistent season in which he made only 23 Premier League starts. Despite that setback, Foden is eager to push on under Maresca, who served as an assistant to Guardiola during City’s Treble-winning 2022-23 season.
“Committing my future to City means everything to me,” said Foden. “Playing for this club is all I’ve ever wanted to do and it’s always an honour to wear the shirt. I can’t wait to work with Enzo again. He was brilliant during the Treble season — someone all the players respected and loved working with.”
