Coventry City have completed the signing of Caleb Yirenkyi from Danish side Nordsjaelland on a long-term contract. The Sky Blues are believed to have paid 27m euros (£23.1m) for the 20-year-old, with a further 3m euros (£2.5m) available in add-ons.
Yirenkyi becomes Coventry’s fifth summer signing as Frank Lampard’s side prepare for life back in the top flight after a 25-year absence. The Ghana international made his debut for the Black Stars in May 2025 and featured at this summer’s World Cup, scoring a stoppage-time winner in his country’s group stage victory over Panama. He has two goals from 15 appearances for Ghana.
Although primarily a midfielder, Yirenkyi has shown versatility by operating at right-back for both club and country. Danish journalist Nicklas Degn, who hosts the Mediano podcast, described him as an “extremely exciting player” who has been “touted as the next big thing”. Speaking to BBC Sport, Degn said Yirenkyi had been “one of the best players in the Danish Superliga in the past season” and that “everyone knew it would just be a matter of time before he went to a bigger league, especially after his World Cup.”
Degn added that Yirenkyi is “a complete number eight” whose versatility is highlighted by his defensive contributions across the spring for both Nordsjaelland and Ghana. He also praised Nordsjaelland’s academy, describing their talent development programme as carrying “an extremely high reputation internationally.”
Yirenkyi himself expressed enthusiasm about working under Lampard. “When I spoke to the head coach about the plans and the style, it’s something I really like, and I look forward to learning from him,” he said. “I’m still young so I want to learn from the head coach, the other players and work really hard for the team.”
