Marcus Rashford faces a pivotal summer as questions over his long-term future at Manchester United remain unresolved. The 28-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona, has spoken of needing time to “rest, reflect, spend some quality time with family and friends, and come back a better version of myself” following England’s World Cup campaign.
Rashford scored 14 goals in 49 appearances for Barcelona during the 2025-26 season, helping the club win La Liga — his first league title. He also featured in six of England’s eight World Cup games as Thomas Tuchel’s side produced the country’s best World Cup performance since 1966, adding to his 77 international caps.
Despite the silverware and the international recognition, his club situation remains complicated. Barcelona held an option to sign Rashford permanently for £26m, but that deadline passed in mid-June without being activated. A separate clause allowing other clubs — Liverpool and Manchester City excluded — to buy him for £40m also expired earlier in July with no takers. Sources close to the player described it as illogical to expect a club to pay more than Barcelona would have had to.
Rashford remains contracted to Manchester United until 2028 on a salary of £325,000 a week, making him the club’s top earner at a time when minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is focused on controlling wage costs, described as the club’s highest expenditure by some distance. Those close to Rashford, including family members who play a key role in guiding his career, are said to be weighing whether his future lies at Old Trafford.
With England’s World Cup over, Rashford is entitled to a three-week break. Unless timings change, he is set to return to Manchester United as they prepare for a six-day training camp in the Republic of Ireland, scheduled around a match against Leeds at Croke Park on 12 August.
