Reece James is a doubt for England’s match against Mexico after missing the squad’s Saturday training session in Mexico City — the only player absent from the session.
The Chelsea defender, 26, suffered a hamstring injury in the closing stages of the goalless draw with Ghana and has yet to train fully with the squad since. The Football Association confirmed to BBC Sport that James is following an individual programme away from the training field, having already sat out England’s last two World Cup fixtures.
There was better news elsewhere in the camp, with Jarell Quansah returning to full training and set to be fit for the Mexico match, which kicks off at 01:00 BST on Monday. The defender had picked up a hamstring injury during the draw with Panama.
Quansah’s return eases Thomas Tuchel’s concerns at right-back, a position that has presented selection headaches in recent matches. Djed Spence started there for the victory over DR Congo, though Declan Rice ended up finishing that game in the role despite being a midfielder.
