Alexia Putellas has chosen London City Lionesses as her next club, with sources close to the 32-year-old telling BBC Sport she has opted for the South London side over Boston Legacy in the United States. Although the Lionesses are confident of completing the deal, club sources confirm no final agreement is yet in place.
The move would represent a stunning coup for London City Lionesses, an independent women’s football club that has continued to turn heads in the transfer market. Sources indicate the club had been pursuing Putellas since January and always held confidence a deal could be reached. Almost every financially capable club in world football was said to be interested, yet London City Lionesses have come out on top.
Putellas will arrive on a free transfer after allowing her Barcelona contract to expire, though London City Lionesses are believed to have offered her substantial wages. During her time at Barcelona, the Spain midfielder accumulated 38 trophies, including 10 league titles. She scored a club-record 232 goals in 507 appearances and sits second on the all-time appearance list, nine behind Melanie Serrano’s tally of 516.
On the international stage, Putellas won the World Cup with Spain in 2023 and was part of the squad that finished runners-up to England at Euro 2025. Her career was interrupted when an anterior cruciate ligament injury ruled her out of Euro 2022 on the eve of the tournament, but she returned to full fitness by the end of the following season.
Since recovering, Putellas has reproduced the form that earned her back-to-back Ballon d’Or awards in 2021 and 2022, and London City Lionesses are closing in on securing one of the most decorated players in women’s football history.
