FIFA World Cup 2026 introduces a new group stage format — 12 groups of 4 teams, with the top 2 from each group plus the 8 best third-place teams advancing to the Round of 32. With 48 nations involved, the group stage is more unpredictable than ever. Here is our analysis of every group and who we think will qualify.
The New Format — What It Means
- 📊 12 groups of 4 teams each
- 📊 Each team plays 3 group stage matches
- 📊 Top 2 from each group qualify automatically (24 teams)
- 📊 8 best third-place teams also advance (8 teams)
- 📊 Total of 32 teams reach the Round of 32
- 📊 This means finishing third is not automatically eliminated — a massive change from previous tournaments
The expanded format means even teams that have a difficult group draw have a realistic chance of advancing. This will lead to more tactical matches in the final group game — teams calculating whether a draw is enough to advance as one of the best third-place teams.

The Groups — Full Analysis
Note: The official group draw for World Cup 2026 takes place in Miami on December 5, 2025. The groups below reflect the official draw results.
Group A — Host Group: USA, Bolivia, Panama, Morocco
The opening group features host nation USA alongside Morocco, Bolivia, and Panama. USA and Morocco are heavy favorites to advance as the top two, with the hosts enjoying enormous home support across their 11 venues.
- 🟢 USA — home advantage, strong squad, motivated
- 🟢 Morocco — 2022 semi-finalists, defensively elite
- 🟡 Panama — dangerous on the counter, could nick third place
- 🔴 Bolivia — altitude advantage gone at sea level, likely to struggle
Our prediction: USA and Morocco advance. Panama push for third place.
Group B — France, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand
The Group of Death before the knockout rounds even begin. France and Argentina — the two most recent World Cup winners — in the same group is a mouth-watering prospect. Both will advance, but the battle for top spot will be fierce.
- 🟢 France — world class squad, Mbappé leading
- 🟢 Argentina — defending champions, Messi’s farewell
- 🟡 Saudi Arabia — beat Argentina in 2022, dangerous
- 🔴 New Zealand — likely to struggle against top opposition
Our prediction: France and Argentina advance. Saudi Arabia fight for third place points.
Group C — Spain, Brazil, Japan, Serbia
Another incredibly tough group. Spain and Brazil are the two favorites but Japan have already proven they can beat both — they defeated Germany and Spain in Qatar 2022. Serbia are physical and dangerous from set pieces.
- 🟢 Spain — technically the best team in the world, Pedri and Yamal
- 🟢 Brazil — five-time champions, Vinicius leading
- 🟡 Japan — beat Spain in 2022, never underestimate them
- 🟡 Serbia — physical, set piece threat, Mitrović dangerous
Our prediction: Spain and Brazil advance. Japan’s third-place points could be enough to go through.
Group D — England, Netherlands, Iran, Ecuador
England and Netherlands are clear favorites to advance from this group. Iran are improving but face a massive step up in quality. Ecuador qualified comfortably through CONMEBOL but face tough opposition here.
- 🟢 England — Bellingham, Saka, Kane — serious title contenders
- 🟢 Netherlands — van Dijk marshalling the defence, dangerous going forward
- 🟡 Iran — physically strong, could cause problems
- 🔴 Ecuador — likely to struggle against European opposition
Our prediction: England and Netherlands advance comfortably.
Group E — Germany, Portugal, Colombia, New Zealand
Germany and Portugal are the standout teams in this group. Colombia — riding an extraordinary unbeaten qualifying run — could push one of the European giants for top spot. This group will produce exciting football.
- 🟢 Germany — rebuilt under Nagelsmann, point to prove
- 🟢 Portugal — Rúben Dias, Bruno Fernandes, strong squad
- 🟡 Colombia — in-form, James Rodríguez, dangerous
- 🔴 Costa Rica — experience but limited quality at this level
Our prediction: Germany and Portugal advance. Colombia’s third-place points likely enough to go through.
Group F — Mexico, Uruguay, Poland, South Korea
Mexico face enormous pressure as co-hosts. Uruguay are always dangerous with their physical style. Poland have Robert Lewandowski — still one of the best strikers in the world at 37. South Korea bring energy and quality throughout the squad.
- 🟢 Mexico — host nation advantage, passionate support
- 🟢 Uruguay — Valverde, Núñez — physical and direct
- 🟡 Poland — Lewandowski still dangerous, experienced squad
- 🟡 South Korea — Son Heung-min, could surprise
Our prediction: Uruguay and Mexico advance. South Korea push hard for third place.
The Group of Death
If Group B (France vs Argentina) is not enough, Group C (Spain vs Brazil vs Japan) runs it very close. Any of the top three teams in Group C could realistically win the entire tournament. Someone of genuine world-class quality will be going home after just three matches.
Easiest Groups
Groups A and D offer the clearest paths to qualification. USA and Morocco in Group A, England and Netherlands in Group D — both groups have two standout favorites with a significant gap in quality to the third and fourth-placed teams.
Biggest Upset Waiting to Happen
Japan beating Spain again. The Samurai Blue have already proven once that they can do it. In a group with Brazil also competing for top spot, Spain might not approach the Japan match with full concentration — and that could be catastrophic. Watch out for Japan causing chaos in Group C.
