Liverpool are set to lose Republic of Ireland international O’Sullivan, with a return to the National Women’s Soccer League understood to be the most likely outcome and Gotham FC emerging as favourites to sign her.
Sources have told BBC Sport that Liverpool are in positive discussions with O’Sullivan and Gotham, with the club expected to receive a large fee for her departure. The 32-year-old’s decision to leave is believed to be a personal one, driven by a desire to return to the United States, where she previously spent nine seasons with North Carolina Courage, making over 150 appearances and captaining the side.
O’Sullivan joined Liverpool in January for £300,000 and has been a standout performer since her arrival, making 13 appearances — nine of them in the league — and helping Gareth Taylor’s side reach the Women’s FA Cup semi-finals. Her exit represents a significant blow to a club already looking to rebuild following a disappointing 2025-26 campaign.
On the international stage, O’Sullivan brings considerable pedigree, having made 132 appearances for the Republic of Ireland and played a key role in their Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign this year.
Liverpool’s summer has been complicated further by their inability to convert goalkeeper Jennifer Falk’s loan move into a permanent deal. The club have already made three signings and still hope to be active in the transfer window, but losing O’Sullivan leaves a notable gap in their plans.
