Few eliminations in recent World Cup memory have been as cruel as Iran’s exit from the 2026 tournament. Amir Ghalenoei’s side went through the entire group stage unbeaten, yet still failed to reach the round of 32, missing out on goal difference.
After draws against New Zealand and Belgium, Iran needed a win against Egypt in Seattle to secure their place in the knockout stage. They fell behind early but responded well, with Ramin Rezaeian’s finish from a tight angle drawing them level after Mehdi Taremi had a penalty saved.
The match appeared to be heading for another draw until Shoja Khalilzadeh turned the ball home from a goalmouth scramble deep into second-half injury time. Khalilzadeh removed his shirt in celebration — earning a booking in the process — and posed for a photograph wearing a pair of sunglasses. The joy was short-lived. The goal was ruled out for offside, with Khalilzadeh’s toe marginally ahead of the penultimate defender in what was an agonisingly tight call.
The match finished 1-1, leaving Iran needing results elsewhere to go their way. They were made to wait until the final round of group stage fixtures to learn their fate, and the news was not good. Algeria and Austria both qualified after scoring dramatic added-time goals, and Iran were eliminated — unbeaten, but without a place in the last 32.
