Micky van de Ven has committed his future to Tottenham by signing a contract extension, with Roberto De Zerbi’s appointment playing a key role in convincing the defender to stay. The Netherlands international, who originally joined from Wolfsburg in 2023 on a six-year deal running until 2029, had been weighing up his options in north London before De Zerbi’s arrival in March proved the turning point in his decision.
The 25-year-old has been a significant figure at Spurs, captaining the side during the final six matches of last season as the club avoided Premier League relegation, and also played his part in their 2025 Europa League triumph. Having made 96 appearances in all competitions since his move from the Bundesliga, Van de Ven has also earned 24 caps for the Netherlands, representing his country at this summer’s World Cup.
“I’ve always loved Spurs, from the first day I stepped in here,” said Van de Ven. “I love the club, I love the fans and I’ve developed really well here. It’s clear the direction the club wants to go in and I want to be a part of it. I’m excited about what’s to come.”
De Zerbi was equally enthusiastic, calling Van de Ven “one of the best centre-backs in Europe and an important player for us”. “We are building something strong here, and players like Micky are an important part of that future,” the Italian manager added.
Elsewhere, James Maddison has moved to ease concerns over his fitness ahead of the new season. The 29-year-old, who missed Spurs’ pre-season tour in July after De Zerbi said it was “not the right moment to take risks” with him, took to Instagram to confirm there had been no fresh setback. “Feeling good after another good session today with the team,” the former Leicester City midfielder wrote. “Working so hard to be healthy and have a great year. Definitely haven’t had any recurrence of any injury I’ve had before.”
